The Explorers Project

The Moving Company gratefully acknowleges the support of The Ontario Arts Council through the Arts in Education.
“There were many moments in class that left myself and the teaching assistants speechless, not only from the beauty radiating from the participants, but their show of courage and complete total personal investment. Words cannot do these moments justice, but these moments are what make the project successful in my eyes.” - Rebecca Hope Terry
The Explorers Project is a series of Movement classes for people who are visually impaired and blind devised and taught by the Artistic Director and other professional dance artists. There are sighted teaching assistants and volunteers present, giving a sense of balance and integration. This project may include, Basic Creative Dance, Yoga, Contact Improvisation or Ballroom Dance classes.
The participants learn movement, open their bodies, expand their range of expression and gain a wider sense of community. The participants and teachers explore new territories, challenge bounderies and have a great time doing it!
Past participants say:
“I enjoy movement. Sometimes I dance for fun, but I feel that there are numerous ways of moving which I've never thought of, and would like to try. So I came to the class looking for new ideas, and new people to socialise with.”
“I didn't take a dance class before because I never had the opportunity.”
“I liked that there were many chances to improvise movements independently. Even when we performed routines as a class, the movements didn't feel oppressively structured. Also there was excellent rapport between the teachers and students, I felt. The environment was very non threatening to me.”
“I really enjoyed learning about all the different types of movement there are because I felt that I was more aware of my body and became more flexible. I also liked that our instructors gave us plenty of feedback, which helped a lot because it built up our confidence levels.”
“I liked the instructors, they were encouraging and knowledgeable and comfortable to work with. They offered very good advice on how to improve areas of difficulty. I liked the creativity involved. I also enjoyed working with a live musician. That seemed to add something to the process. “
